My concentration focuses on the effect of language on culture. I plan on drawing famous attractions or historical landmarks as the main setting and the people in the painting will be silhouettes. The silhouette will be filled in with literature from the particular country. For this piece in particular, I drew Big Ben in London as the background and the silhouette of the couple walking in the foreground will be filled with an excerpt from Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. I want to demonstrate the connection between people to the culture/ architecture. I am drawing from a picture online for this piece. I wasn’t inspired by anyone in particular, but I did draw some inspiration from surfing online. I saw the picture above and I thought that it would be cool to use the idea of silhouette as well as incorporating drawings of famous attractions. I am only half way done my first concentration, since I only outlined Big Ben with a sharpie. However, I plan on using watercolour, ink and maybe pencil crayons to add more value into the piece. I thought sketching/ outlining the background with sharpie was quiet successful, but I don’t know how the watercolour part will turn out. Since watercolour is not a very forgiving medium, I think it will be harder and I need to be more careful. The piece fits into my concentration in the sense that it shows the connection between people, architecture and language. My main idea is to demonstrate how language can allow people to better express their culture. I think by the end of this piece, I will have a better idea about whether this concentration will work out or not. Perhaps, I will even be able to develop a new idea from drawing this piece.
