Inspiration
My work
My third concentration piece is of the Coliseum in Rome, Italy. I used the words from the “Descriptive Poems III Places: The Coliseum” by Lord Byron (1788-1824) to demonstrate lines and values. I referred to a picture of the Coliseum to make sure that my drawing resembles the actual structure, but I decided the colours of the background and the Coliseum as I went along. I think that the idea in this piece is much more developed ever since the first two concentrations. Instead of simply filling the people in the drawings with poems, I am inspired to demonstrate value through the size and angle of words. I used a black sharpie and watercolour to complete this piece. Overall, I think I was successful with the experimentation of words. However, deciding how to place the words and where to change direction was a bit of a challenge. I did not struggle with any materials in particular, since I am a bit more familiar with watercolour. I think this piece fits into my concentration nicely. Not only is the idea more developed, this piece clearly shows the connection between people, culture and literature. After completing this drawing, I am considering changing the direction of my idea a little bit. Perhaps, I can think of other ways to incorporate poems and writings into my paintings, so that they can can look more strong and thoughtful.
